Anthony Joshua has been discharged from hospital in Nigeria just days after being involved in a fatal car crash in Nigeria that resulted in the death of his team two members.

Joshua was medically cleared to recuperate at home on New Year’s Eve, two days after the incident that saw the deaths of his close friends Sina Ghama and Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele.

The tragic accident occurred along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Monday morning, with footage circulating online of Joshua topless and looking dazed in a damaged vehicle.

Anthony Joshua ‘heavy hearted’ after fatal Nigeria car crash

A statement from the regional governments of Lagos and Ogun in Nigeria posted late on Wednesday night said that Joshua was ‘heavy hearted and full of emotions’.

‘Anthony Joshua was discharged from hospital late this afternoon though heavy hearted and full of emotions over the loss of his two close friends he was deemed clinical fit to recuperate from home,’ the statement, posted on X, read.

‘The quality of care and professionalism is truly commendable,’ it continued.

Eddie Hearn’s tribute

Earlier on Wednesday, Joshua’s long-time promoter Eddie Hearn paid tribute to Ayodele and Ghami on Instagram.

Sharing a series of pictures of the duo, Hearn accompanied the post with: ‘Rest in peace Latz and Sina. Your energy and loyalty among so many other great qualities will be deeply missed.

‘Praying for strength and guidance for all their family, friends and of course AJ during this very difficult time.’

Ghami acted as a strength and conditioning coach for the former two-time heavyweight world champion, while Ayodele was a trainer.

Just hours before the crash, Joshua and Ayodele both posted footage on their Instagram accounts of them playing table tennis.

Joshua returned from a 15-month lay-off from boxing by knocking out YouTuber-turned-boxer Paul in the sixth round of their lucrative showdown in Miami earlier this month.

The Olympic gold medal winner then followed up his 29th win in 33 professional fights by calling out British rival Tyson Fury, who is currently retired, for a long-awaited bout in 2026. However, that potential bout is now in the balance, depending on the physical and psychosociological effects on this incident for Joshua.

Joshua was born in Watford to Nigerian parents and spent some of his early school years in the African nation before returning to the UK aged 12.
