Alexander Isak is officially a Liverpool player after joining the club on a manic transfer deadline day.

In the most protracted transfer deal of all summer, Liverpool and Isak finally got their wish after completing a £125million transfer from Newcastle United on Monday.

It is a British record transfer and eclipses the £116m Liverpool paid to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in June. His arrival takes the Reds’ summer spending beyond £400m and will see him battle with fellow recent £79m arrival Hugo Ekitike for the central-striker berth.

Isak had a medical on Monday before signing a six-year contract to join the Premier League champions.

Alexander Isak ‘super happy’ to join Liverpool

The 25-year-old, who will wear the No 9 shirt, is relishing the chance of ‘creating history’ with his new club.

‘This is the next step for me in my career. I’m super happy that I’ve been given this chance and I’m very motivated to do something well with it.

‘I want to create history. I want to win trophies. That’s ultimately the biggest motivation for me.

‘This is the perfect place for me to grow even further and to take my game to the next level and help the team as well.’

Alexander Isak’s acrimonious ending at Newcastle United

It’s been a rollercoaster summer for Isak who was adored by Newcastle United supporters before their affection changed after he sought to leave.

In March, he helped Newcastle live the happiest day in the club’s history for 56 years when they lifted their first piece of silverware since 1969, and first domestic domestic trophy for 70 years, when they beat Liverpool 2-1 in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.

However, come the summer his hero status among many fans has turned into a villanius arc as he pushed to join Liverpool.

Isak has been steadfast in his desire to join the Anfield outfit all summer with his decisions – including training at his former club Real Sociedad as well as releasing public statements – angering the Newcastle fan base.

And on Monday he finally got his wish, leaving a bitter taste among many at his former club – including Newcastle legend Alan Shearer.

Newcastle fans will be hoping £55million new signing Yoane Wissa from Brentford can become their new hero.
