Carlos Alcaraz is the US Open champion for the second time in his career after beating rival Jannik Sinner in four sets.
In the third-straight Grand Slam final between these two, it was Alcaraz who came out on top in New York winning the contest 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 and 6-4.
The Spaniard exacted revenge on Sinner after losing to the Italian in the Wimbledon final less than two months ago. However, Alcaraz did beat him in a French Open classic in June.
Alcaraz was magnificent at Flushing Meadows, proving too much for Sinner, as he won his sixth career Grand Slam title. At 22-years-old, he is the second-youngest player ever to achieve this feat, behind Bjorn Borg.
In addition too, he will return to the top of the world rankings on Monday – ending Sinner’s 65-week reign.
Carlos Alcaraz humble after US Open win
Alcaraz found his groove from the off, and apart from the second set, dominated proceedings.
Despite the comprehensive victory, he remained gracious in victory.
‘I want to start with Jannik, it’s unbelievable what you’re doing the whole season, great level during every tournament that you’re playing… I’m seeing you more than my family,’ said Alcaraz, who took his win-loss record with Sinner to 10-5.
‘It’s great to share a court, to share the locker room, to share everything with you.
‘I’m just really proud about the people I have around. Every achievement I’m having is because of you, thanks to you… this one is yours.’
Meanwhile, Sinner acknowledged the better man won: ‘A lot of big stages and matches we played this season,’ he said.
‘I tried my best today, I couldn’t do more.’
US Open final delayed due to President Donald Trump
The men’s final was delayed by 30 minutes due to the extra security measures put in place due to US president Donald Trump’s presence.
The extra security meant many who had bought a ticket for the 24,000-capacity Arthur Ashe Stadium missed the start of the action – with thousands standing on the plaza outside, waiting in line to enter.
Trump drew a mixed reaction when he was shown on screen during the national anthem, while there was loud booing when he was highlighted again at the end of the first set.
