Chicago White Sox pitcher Liam Hendricks has begun treatment for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

The 33-year-old announced his diagnosis via a statement on Instagram.

He said: ‘Recently I was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

‘Hearing the word “Cancer” came as a shock to my wife and I, as it does to millions of families each year.

‘My treatment begins tomorrow (Monday 9th January), and I am confident that I will make a full recovery and be back on the mound as soon as possible.’

White Sox general manager said: ‘Our thoughts and reactions at this time are for Liam the person, not Liam the baseball player.

‘I know the entire organisation, our staff, his team-mates and certainly White Sox fans will rally in support of Liam and Kristi during the coming months.’

Hendricks has played in the major leagues since 2011, appearing for five teams.

In 2019 he established himself as a dominant reliever with the Oakland Athletics, pitching to a 1.78 ERA.

In the 2020 off-season he signed a three-year, $54million (£44.5m) contract with the White Sox.
