Vado’s 1922 Coppa Italia triumph: The only winners never to play in Serie A

The inaugural Coppa Italia in 1922 stands out as one of the quirkiest chapters in Italian football history.

The FIGC staged the tournament while the national league system remained fragmented and regionalised. Many top clubs refused to take part or dropped out early, frustrated by fixture congestion and political disputes in the game.

Their absence created an opening for smaller sides. Vado Foot-Ball Club, a modest team from the Ligurian port town of Vado Ligure, seized the moment.

Playing home matches on a dusty local pitch, they progressed through the rounds mainly against fellow regional teams before meeting Udinese in the final on 16 July 1922.

The final, played in Vado, ended 1–0 after extra time. Felice Levratto — who later represented Italy — scored the decisive goal.

The triumph gave Vado their only major honour, a story still celebrated as a pure example of cup magic.

Since then, the Coppa Italia has almost always gone to top-flight clubs, with just a few outsiders breaking through.

Only two times in history has the trophy gone to a club outside Serie A: Vado in 1922 and Napoli in 1961–62.

Vado’s victory remains unique as the only win by a club that has never reached the top division.

2. Napoli – 1961–62
   Division: Serie B
   Final: Napoli 2–1 SPAL
   Notes: Coached by Bruno Pesaola. Cup win helped rebuild the club; promotion soon followed.

In more than 100 years, only these two clubs have lifted the Coppa Italia while outside the top division — and only Vado achieved it without ever playing in Serie A.
