Today, September 23, marks the 44th birthday of Gabriele Sandri, known as “Gabbo,” a young Roman and passionate Lazio supporter, tragically lost on November 11, 2007. His death left an indelible mark on Italy’s collective memory, becoming a symbol of justice and a call for accountability.

Who Gabriele Sandri was

Born in Rome in 1981, Gabriele was a well-known DJ in the capital and a fervent Lazio fan. His love for football often led him to follow the team on away trips, including the fateful journey to Milan for the match against Inter. September 23, his birthday, is today an occasion to remember him not just as a supporter, but as a young man with dreams and aspirations.

The tragedy and its consequences

On November 11, 2007, during a stop at the Badia al Pino service station (Arezzo), Gabriele was fatally shot by police officer Luigi Spaccarotella, who was intervening after a confrontation between fans. His death triggered an unprecedented reaction in Italian football, with nationwide protests. The Roma-Cagliari match scheduled that evening was postponed out of respect and solidarity with Lazio supporters.

Memorial at Badia al Pino

In 2011, a memorial stone was unveiled at the Badia al Pino service station, the site of Gabriele’s death. The ceremony was attended by over 200 fans representing various Italian football clubs, including Lazio, Milan, Inter, Juventus, Arezzo, Bari, Venezia, Carrarese, Cremonese, and Ancona. This act of solidarity highlighted the widespread impact of Gabriele’s death across the football community.

Legal proceedings and Lazio fans’ reaction

Luigi Spaccarotella’s legal journey

Luigi Spaccarotella initially claimed that the shooting was accidental, stating that he fired into the air and that the shot that struck Gabriele was unintended. However, ballistics reports contradicted his testimony. In July 2009, he was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to six years in prison. The prosecution had sought a 14-year sentence. On appeal in December 2010, the court reclassified the charge to voluntary homicide and increased the sentence to nine years and four months. The Supreme Court of Cassation upheld this decision in 2012. In 2017, after serving half of his sentence, Spaccarotella was granted semi-liberty to perform voluntary work.

Lazio fans’ reaction

Lazio fans have consistently honoured Gabriele’s memory through various tributes. At the Stadio Olimpico, banners and tifos bearing his image are displayed during matches. Additionally, Lazio players have paid their respects by wearing T-shirts featuring Gabriele’s likeness during warm-ups. For instance, during a match against Parma, midfielder Fabio Firmani wore a T-shirt with Gabriele’s image as a tribute.

Supporters of other clubs have also shown their respect. For example, Genoa fans displayed a banner reading “Gabbo in our hearts” during a Serie A match against Roma. Similarly, during a match between Genoa and Roma, fans from both teams observed a minute’s silence in memory of Gabriele.

Conclusion

Today, as we remember Gabriele Sandri on his birthday, it is important to reflect on the meaning of his life and the message left by his tragic death: a message of justice, respect, and love for life. May his memory continue to inspire future generations to fight for a fairer and more compassionate world.
