The Oval Invincibles are looking increasingly… well, invincible. In front of a sold-out home crowd on Thursday night, the reigning champions pulled off their most audacious win of the season, chasing 172 in just 88 balls to defeat a promising Trent Rockets side. The victory keeps their dream of a third men’s Hundred title alive and very real.
At the heart of this dominant surge was Sam Curran, who lit up the Kia Oval in a matchwinning performance that proved he is the fan favourite to wear England colours once again.
Oval Invincibles: A team on a mission
The Oval Invincibles have now won five of their last six matches, playing with the kind of confidence and cohesion only title-winning teams possess. Every week, a different hero steps up. But against the Rockets, it was a familiar face, the local favourite Curran who ignited the Oval crowd and the title race.
The Rockets had posted a strong 171/7 thanks to a Joe Root masterclass (76 off 41) and a blistering cameo from George Linde (25 off eight). But Curran and his Invincibles team-mates seemed hardly fazed by the above-par total.
At 70/2 with limited balls remaining, most teams would have folded. Instead, Curran and the evergreen Jordan Cox (58* off 32) launched an astonishing counter-attack.
The onslaught started with a strategic time-out where Curran tore apart Sam Cook for a set which went for 32. Reflecting post-match he said: #I knew it was six or out for me, because I was struggling a bit; – indicating how crucial the first set after the timeout was.
The performances within the team have been evenly distributed throughout the season with Curran stating ‘our roles are so consistent’, suggesting a sense of clarity within the camp.
‘We’ve built momentum at the right time,’ he continued. ‘There’s so much belief in this squad whether we’re chasing 140 or 170, we back ourselves to find a way.’
Sam Curran makes a statement
Curran finished with 54 off just 24 balls, smashing sixes with ease and guiding the chase with icy composure. It was a knock that reminded fans and selectors exactly what he’s capable of in high-stakes moments.
After a quieter 2024, Curran has found himself on the fringes of the England setup. But with a winter T20 tour to New Zealand on the horizon and England lacking a proven finisher, this performance could be a turning point.
‘He’s peaking at the right time,’ said Oval Invincibles head coach Tom Moody.
‘If England are looking for someone who can win a game under pressure with the ball or bat Sam’s right there.’
Curran has proven his class around the world in franchise cricket especially in the Indian Premier League having now been part of two franchises since 2019.
With his all-round ability and match awareness, Curran may well be the missing piece in England’s short-format puzzle. This wasn’t just a good innings. It was a statement to Rob Key and he nailed it. Curran added ‘he is chasing three trophies at the moment’ suggesting he isn’t looking too far in the horizon and he is looking to ‘win trophies’.
Oval Invincibles’ title credentials
More than just individual brilliance, what’s made the Invincibles’ run special is the depth and versatility of their squad.
Will Jacks and Tawanda Muyeye have provided explosive starts. Cox has emerged as one of the most reliable middle-order anchors in the competition.
The bowling, led by Jason Behrendorff and supported by world-class spin and pace variation including Rashid Khan and Tom Curran, continues to defend and control totals effectively.
They now sit firmly inside the play-off spots, and if current form continues, could skip the eliminator and go straight to the final at Lord’s next Sunday, a stage they know well.
Having already won in 2023 and 2024, the Invincibles are chasing a historic third title in five seasons, something no other side has come close to achieving in The Hundred’s short but competitive history.
Wrap-up: big win, bigger belief
The Oval Invincibles aren’t just winning, they’re entertaining, dominating, and writing history.
‘It almost felt like one of those matches in India, where there’s so much energy,’ Curran reflected on the crowd’s impact in helping them get over the line.
With a side full of match-winners and the likes of Curran hitting peak form, a third title is more than a possibility it’s starting to feel like destiny.
