Where are they now? Ade Akinbiyi

We all have our favourite Ade Akinbiyi moment don’t we? Mine is in the YouTube clip below, in fact they all are.

Maybe I’m being a bit harsh on the Nigerian one-cap wonder.

Looking back, this is a player that made 76 Premier League appearances for Norwich, Leicester and Sheffield United, and has managed over 150 career goals.

He also had decent spells in the Championship with the likes of Bristol City, Wolves, Crystal Palace, Stoke (where he was named the Potters’ Player of the Year in 2004) and Burnley.

The much-travelled striker, who’s now 38, cost a total of £11.5 million in transfer fees during his career and was the Foxes’ record signing of £5.3 million when he joined from Wolves in 2000.

Akinbiyi’s career began to decline during his final season at Burnley where he failed to replicate his previous stint at the club which saw him net 16 league goals in 39 games – this time around he made 11 appearances without scoring.

The Claret’s manager at the time Steve Cotterill put his poor form down to the fact that he was too bulky after spending too much of his time in the weights room during a spell with Sheffield United.

From there, Akinbiyi tried his luck abroad but after just five months with MLS side Houston Dynamo and eighteen games and one goal to his name, he was soon released and headed back to England where he signed for Notts County who were a League Two club at the time.

It was another spell to forget though and after only 11 games he was released.

He spent the next two years as a free agent and after being without a club for three years many people assumed he had retired.

That was until July this year when he burst back onto the scene as a player-coach for non-league outfit Colwyn Bay.

This is where he remains today, playing alongside partner in crime and former Chelsea defender Frank Sinclair who is the Welsh club’s player/manager.

Akinbiyi’s finest career moments can just about be summed up in 2 minutes 24 seconds…
