The first day of the English cricketing summer ended with a maiden Test century for New Zealand’s Devon Conway, ending a tough day for England.

It was also the first time since 2019 that fans would be able to watch an international cricket match in England, after relaxation of coronavirus restrictions earlier last month.

Conway ended the day unbeaten on 136, to guide the tourists to a competitive score of 246-3.

Ollie Robinson had an enjoyable debut for England however, picking up two wickets.

In the build up to the Test, England announced that players who travelled to the Indian Premier League would be rested for the two-match series with New Zealand.

As a result of this, there were two debutants in Gloucestershire’s James Bracey and Robinson of Sussex.

New Zealand won the toss and chose to bat

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson won the toss and, on a beautiful morning in early June, elected to bat first.

After a solid opening stand between Conway and Tom Latham, Robinson soon made the breakthrough as Latham nicked his delivery onto his stumps – claiming his maiden Test wicket.

After that, England struggled to make any further breakthrough, allowing the tourists to get to the lunch break at 85-1.

Williamson failed to add to his score in the second session as he was bowled by a beauty from James Anderson.

Ross Taylor only added 14 to the total before Robinson claimed his second Test victim after trapping him lbw.

With New Zealand advancing to 114-3, and Conway looking in fine nick on his debut, the tourists were enjoying the best of the return to cricket in England.

They continued to grind out runs as they advanced to 144-3 at the tea break.

It was to be Conway’s day however, as he brought up a magnificent debut century with a beautiful shot for four.

England were left to be frustrated as they failed to take a wicket in the session, with New Zealand ending the day in a very comfortable position of 246-3.

Conway ended the day unbeaten on 136, while Nicholls is on the cusp of a half century, sitting on 46.

Day two coverage from Lord’s continues from 10:30 on Sky Sports Cricket on Thursday.
