James Anderson’s iconic career could be over after he was not offered a new contract by Lancashire.

It is not known what the legendary bowler will do next: retire or look to continue his 26-year career with another county.

The 44-year-old captained his hometown county in the County Championship last season but they finished second bottom in Division Two.

Despite his age, Anderson was still a leading bowler for Lancashire – taking 50 wickets in this year’s County Championship, a total only bettered by six others in Division Two. Such were his feats that he was named Lancashire’s Championship Player of the Year.

Anderson, who made his Lancashire debut in 2001, has taken 443 first-class wickets for the Red Rose as well as 83 List A wickets and 50 in T20.

This setback is deja-vu for Anderson after England forced him to retire from international cricket in 2024 despite still being in good form.
