Champions League final 2021 review: N’Golo Kante starred for Chelsea in midfield and could now be in line for 2021 Ballon d’Or

Chelsea won their second-ever Champions League trophy on Saturday night with a dominant 1-0 win over Manchester City.

German forward Kai Havertz scored the only goal of the game, running on to Mason Mount’s throughball and taking it around Ederson to tap into an empty net.

Despite the goal, N’Golo Kante stole the show with yet another man of the match performance in the Champions League.

The Frenchman was the standout performer in both semi-final ties against Real Madrid and was the same in Portugal, prompting talk of a shot at the Ballon d’Or.

Night to forget for Manchester City

For City, they again failed to win their first major European trophy and put up a poor performance when it mattered most.

Kevin De Bruyne went off with multiple facial injuries in the second half, but his absence was no excuse.
The likes of Riyad Mahrez, Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden didn’t produce enough going forward, while Oleksander Zinchenko was caught napping for the Chelsea goal.

The loss now means it has been 10 years since Pep Guardiola has won the Champions League, failing during his time at both City and Bayern Munich.

They will go again next season, with a busy summer of spending ahead of them.

Despite a disappointing loss, it’s hard to see City falling off next time round and they will undoubtedly be amongst the favourites again.

Following the final, club football will be put on hold until the end of summer with players looking ahead to the delayed Euro 2020 tournament.
