Cristiano Ronaldo is provisionally suspended by Portugal after walk-out

Football

Cristiano Ronaldo has been provisionally banned by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) following his high-profile walkout from Portugal’s UEFA Nations League squad.

Ronaldo walked out of his country’s squad at the end of last month after being left as an unused substitute during their 2-1 win at Norway on September 27 and learning that he would not start against Denmark on October 1.

On Tuesday, the Portugal captain released a near 2,000-word statement explaining his reasons, taking aim at head coach Jorge Jesus for ‘breaking his word’.

The FPF’s rules state any player who fails to appear or walks out on international duties faces a ban of one to six months, as well as a fine.

And on Saturday, the FPF released their own statement revealing that Ronaldo has been provisionally suspended.

‘Disciplinary proceedings were initiated against Cristiano Ronaldo, by decision of the non-professional section, on October 9, 2026, with the objective of ascertaining the potential disciplinary relevance of the facts reported on October 7, 2026,’ their statement read.

‘Without prejudice to the automatic preventive suspension to which he was subject until the date of initiation, a non-automatic preventive suspension of the player was determined, and the proceedings were given urgent status.

‘The proceedings were sent, on October 10, 2026, to the disciplinary instruction committee of the FPF (Portuguese Football Federation), with publicity excluded until the end of the investigation.’

Pedro Proenc, president of the FPF, told Portuguese outlet Record: ‘This is a time for calm and composure. We are all sitting down together at the table.

‘There is a strong desire to have our captain back with us. There will be a normal disciplinary process.’
