The Premier League returns with a new season, new managers, record-breaking transfers and what promises to be another fascinating battle at both ends of the table.
Arsenal begin the campaign as defending champions after finally ending their long wait for a Premier League title under Mikel Arteta. Their 85-point triumph last season was built on the defensive strength and consistency that have become hallmarks of Arteta’s side.
However, retaining the trophy could prove even more difficult than winning it.
Manchester City begin a new era under Enzo Maresca, Liverpool have turned to Andoni Iraola and Chelsea have appointed Xabi Alonso. Manchester United will hope to build on the significant progress made last season, while Tottenham have again reshaped their project.
There has been enormous change on the pitch too.
Premier League clubs have spent heavily once again, with Morgan Rogers moving to Chelsea in a huge deal and Elliot Anderson joining Manchester City. Arsenal have strengthened their midfield with Bruno Guimaraes while Tottenham have added Sandro Tonali.
With the summer transfer window remaining open until September 1, there could still be several major deals before squads are finalised.
At the other end of the division, Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Hull City arrive from the Championship hoping to buck the recent trend of promoted clubs struggling to survive.
Here is our club-by-club look at the 2026–27 Premier League season.
Arsenal
Last season: 1st
Manager: Mikel Arteta
Arsenal finally did it.
After years of near misses, Arteta delivered the Premier League title and the challenge now changes from chasing Manchester City to defending their crown.
The signing of Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle adds even more quality to an already formidable midfield, while Christos Tzolis provides another attacking option.
Perhaps Arsenal’s greatest advantage is continuity. While several of their rivals begin the season under new managers, Arteta’s players understand exactly what is expected of them.
Viktor Gyokeres will again be important in attack, while Bukayo Saka remains one of the league’s outstanding players.
They are rightly favourites.
Prediction: 1st
Manchester City
Last season: 2nd
Manager: Enzo Maresca
For the first time in years, Manchester City enter a Premier League season undergoing genuine reconstruction.
Pep Guardiola’s era is over and Enzo Maresca has inherited one of the biggest jobs in world football.
City have responded by spending heavily. Elliot Anderson has arrived from Nottingham Forest in one of the biggest transfers in Premier League history, while the midfield is undergoing a dramatic transformation.
Rodri’s departure to Barcelona represents a huge change.
What City still possess is Erling Haaland.
The Norwegian won another Golden Boot last season with 27 goals and remains the most frightening goalscorer in English football.
City have enough talent to win the league. Whether Maresca can immediately create the same relentless machine that existed under Guardiola is another question.
Prediction: 2nd
Chelsea
Last season: 8th
Manager: Xabi Alonso
Chelsea remain one of the most difficult clubs to predict.
The appointment of Xabi Alonso is fascinating. His reputation has continued to grow and Chelsea have again backed their manager aggressively in the transfer market.
Morgan Rogers is the headline arrival after his enormous move from Aston Villa.
He joins an attack already containing considerable talent, with Cole Palmer and João Pedro among Chelsea’s biggest threats.
There is enough quality here to challenge for the title.
The question is whether Alonso can turn an expensively assembled collection of players into a consistent team quickly enough.
Prediction: 3rd
Liverpool
Last season: 5th
Manager: Andoni Iraola
Liverpool begin another new era.
Arne Slot delivered the title in his first season but a disappointing title defence eventually cost him his job. Former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola now takes charge.
His aggressive pressing and vertical attacking football should suit Liverpool.
The squad itself is also changing.
Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate have departed, removing enormous experience from the dressing room.
Alexander Isak remains the focal point in attack and Florian Wirtz will be expected to rediscover his best form after an inconsistent campaign.
Liverpool should improve on fifth, but challenging Arsenal immediately may be difficult.
Prediction: 4th
Manchester United
Last season: 3rd
Manager: Michael Carrick
Manchester United finally showed signs of becoming a serious Premier League force again last season.
A third-place finish represented significant progress and Michael Carrick now has the opportunity to build on it.
Benjamin Sesko gives United a potentially elite centre-forward while Youri Tielemans adds experience and creativity in midfield.
Expectations at Old Trafford will consequently be higher.
Another Champions League qualification should be the minimum target.
Prediction: 5th
Tottenham Hotspur
Manager: Roberto De Zerbi
Tottenham’s seemingly permanent search for the right formula continues.
Roberto De Zerbi is the latest man entrusted with turning Spurs into consistent Champions League contenders.
There is plenty to like about the squad.
Sandro Tonali represents a major midfield addition and Tottenham’s willingness to invest means further reinforcements could arrive before the window closes.
De Zerbi’s teams are rarely boring and Spurs should be one of the league’s most entertaining sides.
Whether they will be defensively reliable enough for the top four is another matter.
Prediction: 6th
Aston Villa
Manager: Unai Emery
Villa have lost some significant players, most notably Morgan Rogers, but Unai Emery remains one of the Premier League’s best managers.
Alejandro Garnacho provides pace and unpredictability while Johan Manzambi and João Gomes add further options.
Ollie Watkins remains a proven Premier League goalscorer.
Villa may not quite have enough to repeat their recent Champions League finishes, but they should remain firmly in the European conversation.
Prediction: 7th
Bournemouth
Manager: Marco Rose
Bournemouth were one of last season’s outstanding stories.
The departure of Andoni Iraola to Liverpool inevitably changes the picture, with Marco Rose taking charge.
Maintaining the intensity and identity created under Iraola will be the immediate challenge.
Bournemouth have shown they are capable of identifying talent and rebuilding intelligently.
Another European challenge may be difficult, but they should remain comfortably inside the top half.
Prediction: 8th
Leeds United
Manager: Daniel Farke
Leeds have quietly developed into an increasingly competitive Premier League team.
Daniel Farke has been given the opportunity to continue building and stability could prove important in a season when so many clubs have changed managers.
Their squad looks capable of troubling bigger teams and Elland Road remains one of the more difficult away trips in the division.
A top-half finish would represent another excellent season.
Prediction: 9th
Brighton & Hove Albion
Brighton’s model remains one of the most admired in English football.
Players leave, new prospects arrive and Brighton somehow remain competitive.
There may be periods of inconsistency but there is still enough technical quality in the squad to keep them comfortably clear of trouble.
Prediction: 10th
Brentford
Brentford continue to outperform expectations.
Igor Thiago is now one of the Premier League’s most dangerous centre-forwards after scoring 22 league goals last season.
Keeping him fit could determine how high Brentford can finish.
European qualification might be beyond them, but another comfortable mid-table campaign looks realistic.
Prediction: 11th
Sunderland
Sunderland were one of the surprise packages of last season.
A seventh-place finish and European qualification represented a remarkable campaign.
Repeating that achievement while balancing additional fixtures will be difficult.
Nevertheless, the club has momentum and should have enough to avoid being dragged into the relegation battle.
Prediction: 12th
Everton
Manager: David Moyes
Everton continue to look like a David Moyes team.
They are organised, difficult to break down and capable of making life extremely uncomfortable for stronger opponents.
Jordan Pickford remains one of the best goalkeepers in the division and Everton’s defensive structure should keep them away from serious relegation trouble.
The question is whether they can score enough goals to push towards the top half.
Prediction: 13th
Newcastle United
Manager: Matthias Jaissle
Few clubs have experienced as dramatic a summer as Newcastle.
Eddie Howe has gone and 38-year-old Matthias Jaissle has taken charge.
More significantly, Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon have all departed.
That represents an enormous amount of quality to replace.
Newcastle are effectively beginning a new cycle and patience may be required.
Yoane Wissa provides goals and there is still talent within the squad, but expectations should be significantly lower than in recent seasons.
Prediction: 14th
Crystal Palace
Palace face another period of transition.
Several important players have either left or attracted considerable interest and maintaining their defensive strength could be challenging.
There should still be enough attacking talent to stay clear of the bottom three.
Prediction: 15th
Nottingham Forest
Forest have also experienced substantial squad turnover.
The departure of Elliot Anderson to Manchester City is particularly significant.
They should possess enough Premier League experience to survive, but another season spent looking nervously over their shoulders seems possible.
Prediction: 16th
Fulham
Fulham could be one of the established Premier League clubs most vulnerable to being dragged into trouble.
Their squad has quality, but the margins between lower mid-table and relegation have become increasingly small.
A difficult season could await.
Prediction: 17th
Ipswich Town
Ipswich return to the Premier League hoping lessons have been learned from their previous experience at this level.
The permanent return of Julio Enciso is an exciting addition and gives them genuine Premier League quality in attacking areas.
Of the promoted clubs, Ipswich may be the best equipped to survive.
It could go all the way to the final weeks.
Prediction: 18th
Coventry City
Coventry’s rise to the Premier League is another remarkable chapter in the club’s modern history.
Taiwo Awoniyi gives them a striker with considerable top-flight experience and physical presence.
However, the jump from the Championship remains enormous.
Coventry will need their home form to be exceptional if they are to survive.
Prediction: 19th
Hull City
Hull arrive through the Championship play-offs and bookmakers have immediately installed them as strong favourites for relegation.
The Premier League has become increasingly unforgiving for promoted teams.
Hull will hope organisation, momentum and the freedom of having little to lose can keep them competitive.
Survival, however, would represent a major achievement.
Prediction: 20th

Title Race
Arsenal start as favourites to retain their crown and it is easy to understand why.
Arteta has the advantage of continuity while Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool are all adapting to new managers.
The champions have also strengthened rather than stood still.
Manchester City remain the most obvious challengers. Haaland alone ensures they can never be discounted, while the scale of City’s midfield rebuild suggests they are determined to immediately reclaim the title.
Chelsea are the potential wildcard.
If Alonso can quickly find his best XI and impose his tactical ideas, Chelsea possess enough individual quality to become genuine challengers.
Liverpool should improve under Iraola, although the departure of several experienced players could make this more of a transitional campaign.
Title odds:
Arsenal – around 6/5
Manchester City – around 7/2
Liverpool – around 11/2
Chelsea – around 8/1
Manchester United – around 9/1
Prediction: Arsenal
Golden Boot Race
There is one overwhelming favourite.
Erling Haaland enters the season at around 4/6 to finish as the Premier League’s leading scorer after winning last season’s Golden Boot with 27 goals.
Alexander Isak is regarded as his closest challenger at around 8/1.
Brentford’s Igor Thiago deserves considerably more attention after his 22-goal campaign and can be found at around 10/1 to 12/1.
Ollie Watkins remains a reliable goalscorer for Aston Villa, while João Pedro, Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko provide alternatives at longer prices.
Selected Golden Boot odds:
Erling Haaland – 4/6
Alexander Isak – 8/1
Igor Thiago – 10/1
Ollie Watkins – 14/1
João Pedro – 16/1
Viktor Gyokeres – 20/1
Benjamin Sesko – 20/1
Antoine Semenyo – 25/1
Cole Palmer – 40/1
Prediction: Erling Haaland
Haaland is hardly an adventurous selection, but sometimes the obvious answer is the correct one.
If he remains fit, another 25-plus goal season looks entirely realistic.
Golden Glove Race
David Raya is again the man to beat.
Arsenal’s defensive structure has been fundamental to their rise under Arteta and that makes their goalkeeper the natural favourite.
Manchester City’s Gianluigi Donnarumma and Liverpool’s Alisson are his principal rivals.
Jordan Pickford could provide value further down the market. Everton are unlikely to dominate matches like Arsenal or City, but Moyes’ defensive organisation should give Pickford opportunities to accumulate clean sheets.
Selected Golden Glove odds:
David Raya – around 7/5
Gianluigi Donnarumma – around 5/2
Alisson – around 9/2
Senne Lammens – around 14/1
Robert Sanchez – around 16/1
Prediction: David Raya
Arsenal are our title favourites and their defensive record should again be among the best in the division.
Relegation Battle
The bookmakers are extremely pessimistic about the promoted clubs.
Hull begin as approximately 1/4 favourites for relegation, while Coventry and Ipswich are both around 4/6.
Recent Premier League seasons have demonstrated just how difficult the transition from the Championship has become.
However, it would be surprising if all three went down without at least one established Premier League club becoming involved.
Fulham look vulnerable and Nottingham Forest could also face a difficult campaign.
Ipswich are our pick to make the strongest survival challenge, but we are predicting all three promoted teams to ultimately return to the Championship.
Relegated: Ipswich Town, Coventry City and Hull City
Key Predictions
Premier League champions: Arsenal
Champions League qualification: Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool
Europa/European places: Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa
Golden Boot: Erling Haaland – Manchester City
Golden Glove: David Raya – Arsenal
Player to watch: Morgan Rogers – Chelsea
Breakout player: Johan Manzambi – Aston Villa
Surprise package: Leeds United
Team to disappoint: Newcastle United
Best promoted team: Ipswich Town
Relegated: Ipswich Town, Coventry City, Hull City
The 2026–27 Premier League season begins with Arsenal finally occupying the position they spent years trying to reach.
They are the champions everyone else must catch.
Manchester City are rebuilding, Chelsea are embarking on the Xabi Alonso era and Liverpool have placed their faith in one of Europe’s most exciting coaches in Iraola.
Behind them, Manchester United want to prove last season’s progress was genuine, while Tottenham and Aston Villa will again target Europe.
The Premier League rarely follows the script.
But with continuity, an outstanding defence and a squad that appears stronger than the one which lifted the trophy last season, Arsenal are our choice to do it again.
