Europa League roundup week two – David Moyes’ West Ham side march on while Leicester City, Rangers and Celtic all slip up again in Europe

There were more big results in the Europa League on Thursday, with some major sides struggling while others thrived and continued their good form.

David Moyes’ West Ham side made it two wins out of two in Europe, winning 2-0 against Rapid Vienna.

Again, Declan Rice made the scoresheet before Said Benrahma rounded off proceedings with a 94th minute strike.
The other fixture in Group H saw Dinamo Zagreb beat KRC Genk 3-0, avenging their loss to the Hammers last time out.

Leicester City didn’t fare as well, losing 1-0 to Polish side Legia Warsaw leaving them still without a win in the Europa League this season.

Mahir Emreli netted the only goal of the game to leave the Foxes bottom of Group C.

They are joint bottom with Italian club Napoli, who were beaten 3-2 by Spartak Moscow in the other fixture in the group.

Both Eljif Elmas and Victor Osimhen netted for the Italians, but a Quincy Promes brace and a goal from Mikhail Ignatov sealed victory for Spartak.

Scottish Pain

Steven Gerrard’s Rangers lost again in Group A, leaving them bottom and with zero points after a 1-0 defeat to Sparta Prague.

The game was overshadowed by shocking racist abuse from fans of the Czech side, targeting Glen Kamara who was the victim of abuse from a fellow player just six months ago in the same competition.

The other Group A match saw Lyon beat Brondby 3-0, with two strikes from Karl Toko Ekambi and one from Houssem Aouar sending the French club top of the group.

Like their fierce rivals, Celtic also remain on zero points after losing again in Europe, this time facing a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Bayer Leverkusen.

The Rest

Goals from Piero Hincapie, Florian Wirtz, Lucas Alario and Amine Adil saw the German side go top of Group G.

Real Betis also won their second game in Europe this season, easily beating Hungarian team Ferencvarosi 3-1.

Elsewhere, PSV thrashed SK Sturm Graz 4-1 to go top of Group B, with strikes from Ibrahim Sangare, Eran Zahavi,

Phillip Max and Yorbe Vertessen ensuring a comfortable win for the Dutch side.

They are above AS Monaco on goal difference alone, after the French team only managed to draw 1-1 against Real Sociedad.

Axel Disasi opened the scoring, before Sociedad equalised through Mikel Merino.
In Group D, Olympiakos comfortably beat Fenerbahce 3-0, with Giorgos Masouras netting twice after Tiquinho Soares’ opener.

The victory saw the Greek champions go top of the group, despite Eintracht Frankfurt beating Royal Antwerp 1-0 through a late Goncalo Paciencia goal.

Lazio bounced back from their opening round loss in Group E, this time winning 2-0 against Lokomotiv Moscow.

A first club goal for Toma Basic was quickly followed by a goal for Patric as Maurizio Sarri’s side got back to winning ways in Europe.

A 0-0 draw was played out in the other Group E game between Marseille and Galatasaray.

Finally, in Group F, Red Star Belgrade beat Ludogorets 1-0 while Sporting Braga won 3-1 against FC Midtjylland.
