Manchester City have announced the signing of Gianluigi Donnarumma in a flurry of transfer of activity confirmed by the club after deadline day.
City revealed the news on Tuesday morning, with Donnarumma arriving in a £26million transfer from Paris Saint-Germain after being deemed surplus to requirements by the French giants who signed Lucas Chevalier from Lille earlier this summer.
The Italy goalkeeper joins on a five-year deal, with the option of a further year.
His arrival coincides with long-standing first-choice goalkeeper Ederson ending an eight-year spell at the club to join Turkish outfit Fenerbahce in a £12.1m transfer.
Also on Tuesday, City announced that Manuel Akanji has left the club – joining Inter Milan on a season-long loan before Monday’s 7pm deadline.
Gianluigi Donnarumma: Signing for Man City is ‘special’
Upon joining City, Donnarumma spoke of his elation of moving to the Premier League giants.
‘To have signed for Manchester City is such a special and proud moment for me,’ he said.
‘I am joining a squad packed with world-class talent and a team led by one of the greatest managers in the history of football in Pep Guardiola. This is a club every player in world football would love to join.
‘To now be able to play for the club is a huge honour and a privilege.’
Donnarumma completes Manchester City’s summer spending
The 26-year-old’s arrival is City’s seventh and final signing of the summer as they look to wrestle back their Premier League title from holders Liverpool.
Donnarumma is also the third goalkeeper to sign for City this summer after James Trafford re-joined from Burnley for more than £27m and Marcus Bettinelli arrived from Chelsea.
Trafford has started in goal for City so far this season but Pep Guardiola’s side have endured a poor start to the campaign – which included a 2-1 defeat at Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday.
In Donnarumma though they have a goalkeeper with vast experience, despite his young age. He has already amassed 74 caps for Italy and helped his country win the delayed Euro 2020 tournament against England.
The former AC Milan keeper has already made 412 club appearances – including 47 last season for PSG that culminated in them winning the Champions League for the first time in their history.
