Martin O’Neill is back in the Celtic dugout for a second spell this season after being announced as their interim manager once more.

In what has been a chaotic day for the Scottish giants, O’Neill returns until the end of the season after they decided to sack Wilfried Nancy earlier on Monday.

O’Neill was first appointed as Celtic’s interim manager in October following the shock resignation of Brendan Rodgers. He then relinquished that role when the club hired Nancy in December.

However, the 73-year-old is now back after Nancy was relieved of his duties following a run of six losses from his eight games in charge across just 33 days. The Northern Irishman, who managed Celtic between 2000-2005, has Shaun Maloney retuning as his interim assistant manager with Mark Fotheringham and Stephen McManus back too.

O’Neill’s eight-game spell earlier this season yielded seven wins and he is delighted to be back for a third spell in total at Celtic Park.

Martin O’Neill ‘honoured’ to make Celtic return

‘I am really pleased, in fact, very honoured to be asked back to manage the team again and I am looking forward to getting back to work again with the players,’ he told club media.

‘I know we would all have hoped for things to have worked out differently under Wilfried and I personally want to wish him good luck with everything he does in the game. He is a fine man and I am sure he will go on and achieve success again, I have no doubt of that.

‘For me, I’ve been asked to take this great job on again and my focus will be to try and get us back to winning ways if we can. We will need everyone right behind us.

‘We still have a lot to look forward to and a lot to try and achieve, and myself, Shaun and the coaching staff and, of course, the players will be giving everything to achieve all the success we can for the club.’
