Paris Saint-Germain have added more silverware to their cabinet after coming from behind in normal time and on penalties to beat Tottenham Hotspur to win the UEFA Super Cup.

Tottenham looked on course to win the showpiece when they led 2-0 after an impressive 84-minute showing in what was new manager Thomas Frank’s, who replaced the sacked Ange Postecoglou, first competitive match in charge.

They took the lead on 39 minutes when centre back Micky van de Ven reacted quickest in the penalty area to score.

And just three minutes after half-time, Van de Ven’s centre-back partner – and newly-appointed captain – Cristian Romero headed home to make it 2-0.

However, Spurs advantage quickly dissipated in the final minutes of the match in stunning fashion as the Champions League holders fought back to force penalties.

First, Lee Kang-in started their recovery with an excellent left-footed strike from 20 yards out that nestled into the far corner in the 85th minute.

Then deep into stoppage time, Goncalo Ramos scored with a close-range header after an excellent cross from Ousmane Dembele on 94 minutes.

Penalty heartache for Tottenham Hotspur

So the match went to penalties and it was deja-vu for Tottenham as they led two-nil after Dominic Solanke and Rodrigo Bentancur scored their spot-kicks, while Vitinha missed his for the French giants.

Ramos made no mistake with his strike, but then the tide began to turn for the Europa League holders when Van de Ven saw his shot saved.

Dembele converted his to make it 2-2 after six penalties and the Mathys Tel couldn’t restore Tottenham’s lead as he dragged his effort wide.

This gave PSG the advantage and they duly took it as Lee scored.

Pedro Porro had to score to keep Spurs in it and he did with aplomb into the top right-hand corner.

All eyes were on left back Nuno Mendes to deliver the UEFA Super Cup for PSG and he did with a stunning strike into the roof of the net.

The victory sparked mass jubilation for PSG, just a month after they lost the Club World Cup final to Chelsea in the United States of America.

For Tottenham it meant missing out on winning a second European trophy in three months, with their focus now on the new Premier League which begins this week.

Frank will be hoping his side learns from their mistakes when they host Burnley on Saturday afternoon (3pm BST).
