Premier League review week 33: Tottenham and Arsenal lose to allow Manchester United close the gap on top-four race

There were just six games in the Premier League this weekend amid the FA Cup semi-final fixtures, with the race for a top-four spot heating up and the relegation battle getting tighter.

Manchester United squeeze past Norwich City

Manchester United were the only team in the hunt for a top-four spot to win, beating Norwich 3-2.

Cristiano Ronaldo netted a hat-trick as the Red Devils returned to winning ways, scraping past a resilient Canaries side who scored through Kieran Dowell and Teemu Pukki.

The result saw United move into fifth, while Norwich remain bottom of the table.

North London misery

Both north London clubs lost to mid-table sides, with Southampton beating Arsenal and Tottenham losing to Brighton.

A Jan Bednarek goal along with some inspired goalkeeping from Fraser Forster for Southampton handed the Gunners their third loss in a row, jeopardising their chances of a Champions League spot.

Leandro Trossard was on hand to score for Brighton as they handed Spurs their first loss in their last five games, although Antonio Conte’s side still sit in the top four.

West Ham held by Burnley

Fellow European challengers West Ham struggled in their 1-1 draw against managerless Burnley, keeping them in seventh having played at least a game more than their rivals.

Defender Ben Mee took charge of the Clarets following Sean Dyche’s sacking, with the game ending in a draw after goals from Wout Weghorst and Tomas Soucek.

Down at the bottom

Watford lost again, being beaten 2-1 by Brentford and further damaging their hopes of survival.

Christian Norgaard opened the scoring, with Pontus Jansson scoring a 95th minute winner after Emmanuel Dennis had initially equalised for the Hornets.

Finally, Newcastle United came from behind to beat Leicester City, winning 2-1 and moving up to 14th in the process.

January addition Bruno Guimaraes scored twice for the hosts, cancelling out Ademola Lookman’s opener.

In the FA Cup

In the FA Cup, Liverpool beat Manchester City 3-2 while Chelsea fended off Crystal Palace with a 2-0 win.
