Russell Martin has been sacked as Rangers manager after a disappointing start to the season for the Scottish giants.

Martin’s final match in charge was Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Falkirk in the Scottish Premiership, with his fate confirmed just a few hours later.

That was result was just the 39-year-old’s 17th match in charge of Rangers, with his rein lasting 123 days in total at the club since signing a three-year deal in June. During that period he won just one of his seven league matches, drawing five, and departs with five victories in all competitions.

Martin’s time at the Ibrox outfit has been difficult, having faced fan protests against his appointment following their poor start to this campaign.

It took Rangers until late September to win in the Scottish Premiership and the club were humiliated 9-1 on aggregate by Club Brugge in the Champions League play-offs in August.

As the domestic season enters its second international break, Rangers are eighth in the Premiership and trail leaders Hearts by 11 points.

Rangers statement on sacking Russell Martin

In a short statement released on Sunday night, Rangers – who are now on the hunt for a fourth manager in 2025 after Philippe Clement, Barry Ferguson and Martin – said the former Southampton boss had ‘not met the club’s expectations’.

‘Rangers football club confirms that it has parted company with Head Coach, Russell Martin.

‘While all transition periods require some time, results have not met the club’s expectations.

‘Assistant Head Coach, Matt Gill, and First-Team Coach, Mike Williamson, will also be departing.

‘Russell and his staff have worked exceptionally hard throughout their time at the club. We thank them for their efforts and wish them well for the future.

‘Further updates from the club will follow in due course.’
