Manchester United have parted ways with Ruben Amorim, ending his short and increasingly troubled spell at Old Trafford after just 14 months in charge.

The Portuguese coach was dismissed on Monday morning, following a run of disappointing results and a public breakdown in relations with the club hierarchy.

Amorim’s final game was a 1-1 draw at Leeds United, extending United’s poor away run and reflecting broader struggles throughout the season.

His tenure was marked by tactical inconsistency, off-field tensions, and a failure to deliver the sustained improvement the club demanded.

Where things went wrong

1. Poor results and tactical issues

Despite flashes of promise, United’s overall form under Amorim was inconsistent. The team often struggled to impose itself in the Premier League, and key matches slipped away. Recent form – including only one win in five league games- contributed heavily to the decision.

Tactically, Amorim’s preferred systems were questioned. At times his 3-4-3 setup lacked cohesion and failed to adapt effectively to the rigours of the Premier League, and critics argued the team underperformed relative to its talent.

2. Public conflict with the board

A pivotal turning point came when Amorim publicly criticised the club’s board and recruitment process, demanding more control over transfers and insisting he was the ‘manager, not just the coach.’ These comments aggravated tensions with United’s leadership and accelerated his exit.

This very public dispute mirrored similar breakdowns seen in other clubs – and was widely interpreted as a ‘back me or sack me’ ultimatum that the hierarchy ultimately decided it could not accept.

3. Strain in relationships

Reports indicated strained communication between Amorim and key figures like director of football Jason Wilcox, particularly over transfer strategy and team identity. That friction eroded confidence in his long-term fit at the club.

Were There Any Positives?

Although his time at United ended acrimoniously, Amorim’s tenure wasn’t without highlights:

  • Strong moments: There were matches where United played with urgency and structure, and certain tactical tweaks showed promise before fading.
  • Competitive position: At times this season the team even looked to be in contention for top-four before form slumped.
  • Adaptation efforts: Amorim attempted tactical flexibility and adjustments, such as considering shifts away from his default system when resources were stretched.

However, the positives were not sustained enough to override inconsistency and off-field turmoil – ultimately leaving his achievements overshadowed by the mounting pressure.

Caretaker manager: Darren Fletcher to take the helm

Darren Fletcher is stepping in as caretaker manager following Amorim’s dismissal. Former Manchester United midfielder and current under-18s head coach, Fletcher has long been considered a natural interim option and has impressed within the club’s youth setup.

United will likely turn to Fletcher as a steadying presence while they search for a long-term successor. His deep ties to the club and understanding of its culture make him an appealing short-term figure amid a turbulent period.

What’s next for Manchester United?

With Amorim gone and Fletcher lining up as caretaker, United face a crucial mid-season transition. The coming weeks will determine whether the club can arrest its decline, stabilise performances, and attract a manager capable of restoring Old Trafford’s competitive edge. The expectation now is a thorough search for a permanent manager, with Fletcher keeping the seat warm in the meantime.
