Nottingham Forest have appointed their third manager of the season already with Sean Dyche named as their new head coach.

Dyche has signed a contract until the summer of 2027 at the City Ground. His coaching staff will include Ian Woan and Steven Stone, who both played for Nottingham Forest.

The 54-year-old succeeds Ange Postecoglou who was sacked after just 39 days in charge – and just minutes after Saturday’s 3-0 home defeat by Chelsea.

As well as Postecoglou’s exit, Forest sacked Nuno Espirito Santo last month after just three games of this campaign. Nuno is back in management though at West Ham United.

Dyche takes over a Forest side who are 18th in the league table after one win in eight games during what has been a difficult start to the season.

This first game will be a Europa League game at home to Porto on Thursday before Forest are at Bournemouth in the Premier League on Sunday.

Sean Dyche wants to get Nottingham Forest ‘back on the front foot’

Dyche came through the ranks at Forest and wants to give the locals something to be proud of, although insisting that they need to do the basics well too.

‘We want to get back on the front foot, in old football terminology, and hopefully give the crowd something to cheer about and reconnect,’ he told BBC Radio Nottingham.

‘The Forest fans in my experience have been very fair down the years and I don’t think it’s far away from the team reconnecting. The first thing is performances, get them back on that winning edge they have shown.

‘The basics have always got to be in place.

‘Strong, fit and organised is a good start point, I want the players to have their freedom to go and play.

‘I’ve had a meeting with them, expressed that, and there’s some talent here. So how can we find that balance, the risk and rewards going forward to score goals but also the base which has been such a good weapon for Forest?

‘[It’s about] reassuring them what good players we think they are and a reminder of what they have already done, how we can bring consistency and all the things they’ve done and take it forward.

‘Don’t just rely on the past. That can be respected, but how can we build that forwards?’

Nottingham Forest statement on Sean Dyche

In their statement about Dyche, Forest said the former Burnley and Everton boss ‘brings the perfect blend’ to their club.

‘A respected and experienced Premier League manager, Dyche brings the perfect blend of character, tactical acumen and proven achievement to guide the club through its next chapter,’ they wrote.

‘As a former Forest youth player who lives locally, Dyche also has a deep understanding of the values and pride of Forest and its supporters.

‘His appointment represents the best opportunity for a successful and competitive season across both domestic and European competitions.’
