Tottenham win Europa League and qualify for Champions League next season with 1-0 win over Manchester United

Tottenham have ended their 17-year wait for silverware with a narrow 1-0 win over Manchester United in the Europa League final.

Brennan Johnson has written himself into Spurs folklore with the only goal of the game on 42 minutes.

The Wales forward’s strike was indicative of the match – a scruffy one, not for the purists.

Everyone connected with the north London outfit will not care though, as victory at the San Mames Stadium in Bilbao means they will play in the Champions League next season and have earned £100m for doing so too.

For Manchester United though, questions will be asked about where do they go from here. In a dour match where they were marginally the better side, they are now staring at the prospect of finishing 17th in the Premier League and with no European football at all.

The Red Devils are 16th with Spurs’ 17th but in a match that both teams had to win it is the latter who can smile about something despite a gloomy domestic campaign.
