Celtic have sacked Wilfried Nancy as their manager, just 33 days after his appointment following a disastrous run of results.

Nancy was appointed in charge of the Scottish giants on December 3, signing a two-and-a-half-year contract.

However, just a month later he has gone after losing six of his eight matches at the helm.

The final straw for the Scottish giants came during Sunday’s 3-1 home defeat by bitter rivals Rangers in the Scottish Premiership. Twenty four hours later he was relieved of his duties.

The 48-year-old became the first Celtic manager to lose his first two games before suffering a 3-1 defeat by St Mirren in the Premier Sports Cup final and a 2-1 reverse at Dundee United.

It was the first time Celtic had lost four games in a row since a similar run under the legendary Jock Stein in 1978.

They won back-to-back league matches against Aberdeen and Livingston to stop the slide but then the downward trend continued with a 2-0 defeat Motherwell on Tuesday before losing to Rangers at the weekend.

It’s been a season of upheaval for Celtic, with Brendan Rodgers resigning in a shock manner in October.

Martin O’Neill replaced Rodgers as an interim manager and steadied the ship with seven wins in his eight matches in charge before Nancy’s ill-lived appointment. There were many who questioned the decision to let O’Neill believe that cup final too.

Serving from June 1999 to February 2000, John Barnes had previously been Celtic’s shortest serving permanent manager before the Frenchman’s dismissal, overseeing 29 matches in his eight months.

Celtic statement on Wilfried Nancy’s sacking

On their website, the Bhoys put a short statement about Nancy’s exit, writing: ‘Celtic Football Club today announces that it has decided to terminate the contract of manager Wilfried Nancy, with immediate effect.

‘The club thanks Wilfried for his efforts and wishes him and his family well for the future.

‘Wilfried’s assistants, Kwame Ampadu, Jules Gueguen, and Maxime Chalier, will also be leaving the club and they take with them our good wishes.

‘The Club can also confirm that Paul Tisdale has left his position as Head of Football Operations. We thank Paul for the contribution he has made in that role.

‘A further update will be provided to supporters as soon as is practical.’
