Dustin Poirier stuns Conor McGregor with a second-round TKO victory at UFC 257 to win their rematch at Fight Island

Dustin Poirier dusted off Conor McGregor within two rounds on Sunday morning after landing a brutal combination of hooks to sit the Irishman down.

Referee Herb Dean was left with no choice other than to stop the fight as McGregor was down and receiving a beating with no sign of defence.

The fight was evenly matched throughout, however there was a slight advantage towards Poirier as his leg kicks were clearly damaging McGregor.

You could argue that McGregor was dominating the fight from a boxing standpoint. However, every heavy punch that the Irishman threw at Poirier, the American was able to handle it and keep attacking.

At the start of round two McGregor was still getting hit with leg kicks and they started to leave visible damage.

The Notorious was limping and hobbling around the ring when Poirier delivered a perfectly executed left hook to McGregor, which left the Irishman unstable, forcing him to try and correct his balance.

But this attempt of correction was met with another heavy blow from Poirier as he caught McGregor cleanly square on his nose – knocking down the former double weight champion.

Poirier then mounted McGregor and was blasting him with hammer fists causing Herb Dean to call an end to the fight.

After the fight there was mutual respect as after the announcement of Poirier’s win – there was even a handshake attempt from McGregor.

But, interestingly there was a gesture from Poirier singling one-one … Which could be a hint at another future fight between the two warriors!

In the press conference McGregor admitted to the superiority of Poirier throughout the fight.

“My leg is completely dead. I thought I was checking the leg kicks, but fair play to Dustin.”

There were also words of praise given by both fighters to each other as they walked back to their rooms and after the press conferences.

The Poirier win makes it one-all between him and McGregor so there is room for a third bout.

But McGregor has once again announced his retirement, but it would not be the first time he came out to fight again!
