England scrum-half Alex Mitchell has been ruled out for the entirety of this month’s Nations Championship campaign due to another hamstring injury.

The No 9 suffered his fourth hamstring injury of the year while on club duty for Northampton Saints during their PREM rugby 28-14 win over Gloucester on Saturday.

The 29-year-old now faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines, while he recovers.

It’s a major blow to England head coach Steve Borthwick who will be without his likely first-choice scrum-half.

England face Australia (on Sunday), Japan (November 14) and New Zealand (November 21) before the Nations Championship Finals Weekend across November 27-29.

Mitchell’s injury means Leicester Tigers’ scrum-half Jack van Poortvliet will retain the No 9 shirt – having started all three of England’s summer Tests.

Bath’s Ben Spencer and Bristol Bears’ Harry Randall were called in as scrum-half options on Monday.
