The penultimate round of this year’s Six Nations was full of drama as we saw three closely-fought matches. TIBS News reviews the action.

Ireland battle past 14-man England

Ireland kept their Six Nations hopes alive after a gruelling 32-15 victory over 14 men England at Twickenham after a Charlie Ewels’ red card for the hosts in the first two minutes.

Ewels clashed heads with Ireland lock James Ryan during an attempted tackle.

England battled spiritedly and began clawing the game back after two tries from James Lowe and Hugo Keenan. Marcus Smith, who’s becoming a key player for his nation, kept England in touch with his boot as the first half finished 15-9.

Smith’s boot levelled the scores midway through the second half as Twickenham transformed into a cauldron of noise.

However, Ireland’s man advantage eventually paid off as Jack Conan and Finly Bealham crossed to secure the win.

Although England cannot win the title, if they defeat France next week this opens the door for the Irish who face an inconsistent Scotland side.

France on the verge of a Grand Slam

France are within touching distance of the Grand Slam and first Six Nations titles since 2010 after a 13-9 battling victory over Wales.

Fabien Galthie’s side now host England knowing that a win would secure glory for his side who have become a dominant force in world rugby.

Early penalties from Melvyn Jaminet and Dan Biggar cancelled each other out before a blistering attacking display from the French led to flanker Anthony Jelonch going over.

Biggar’s boot kept Wayne Pivac’s side in the game as the teams went into half-time with France narrowly leading 10-9.

Jaminet extended the lead from another penalty as France’s defence stayed firm as Wales rued missed chances as they continue their disappointing campaign.

Scotland stutter to win over Italy

Scotland spluttered to a bonus-point 33-22 win over Italy in Rome.

Chris Harris went over twice, and Sam Johnson scored in the first half cancelling out Callum Bradley’s try for the Azzurri.

Darcy Graham and Stuart Hogg extended their lead, but Scotland faltered near the end as Ange Capuozzo scored twice.

Italy suffered their 36th consecutive loss as they play Wales next while Scotland play Ireland.
