Defending French Open champion Carlos Alcaraz will not partake in this year’s tournament due to a wrist injury.

Alcaraz, who won an epic final 11 months against rival Jannik Sinner, suffered his issue during his first-round victory at the Barcelona Open earlier this month.

The 22-year-old has tests to determine the severity of his wrist injury and it has been concluded that he will feature at Roland Garros next month.

‘After the results of the tests carried out today, we have decided that the most prudent thing to do is to be cautious and not participate in Rome or Roland Garros, while we assess the situation to determine when we can return to the court,’ the 22-year-old posted on Instagram.

‘This is a difficult time for me, but I am sure we will come out of this stronger.’

The Spaniard and world No 2 began the year by winning his first Australian Open title – becoming the youngest man to complete the career Grand Slam.

His absence sees Sinner the clear favourite in Paris and opens up the opportunity for the world No 1 to secure his own career Grand Slam – winning each of the major tournaments at least once – with the French Open the only one missing from his collection.
