Coco Gauff wins her maiden French Open title after three-set triumph over Aryna Sabalenka

Coco Gauff has won her first French Open title, and second career major, after overcoming world No 1 Aryna Sabalenka in an enthralling three-set final.

In a showpiece that pitted the first seed against the second, it was the latter who prevailed 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-4 in Paris.

It was redemption for Gauff who lost the final here in 2022 to Iga Swiatek.

The 21-year-old American remarked that Saturday’s victory was harder than her US Open title in 2023 against Sabalenka.

‘I think this [Grand Slam] win was harder than the first because you don’t want to get satisfied with just that one.

For Sabalenka, who was also bidding for her first Roland Garros title, she was left ruing her display after winning the first set.

‘This hurts so much. Congratulations to Coco – she was a better player than me.’
