Jannik Sinner has avenged his French Open final defeat by Carlos Alcaraz to win Wimbledon in four sets on Centre Court.

In a rematch of the epic Roland Garros showdown five weeks ago, this time it was the Italian who prevailed as the winner – triumphing 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in over three hours of enthralling tennis.

It was Sinner’s fourth Grand Slam title of his career and a first major victory not on a hard court.

Jannik Sinner hails ‘special’ Wimbledon win

‘It is so special. I’m living my dream,’ Sinner, who served a three-month doping ban earlier this year, said.

‘I had a very tough loss in Paris, but at the end of the day it doesn’t matter how you win or lose – you just have to understand what you did wrong.

‘We accepted the loss, kept working and that’s why I’m holding this trophy.’

Carlos Alcaraz gracious in defeat

Sinner’s win stopped 22-year-old Alcaraz from becoming only the fifth man in the Open era to win three consecutive Wimbledon titles.

‘It is always difficult to lose, but first of all I have to congratulate Jannik again,’ Alcaraz reflected.

‘It is a really well-deserved trophy. He has been playing great tennis and will continue to be a great rival.’

Rivalry for years to come

Tennis fans have been yearning for the next rivalry in men’s sport following the retirements of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray, while Novak Djokovic nears the end of his career.

A duopoly is forming with Sinner and Alcaraz – with the world No 1 and No 2 having won the last six Grand Slams between them.
