DP World Tour to refuse golfers signed up to LIV Golf to play in their events in 2027 season

Teeing Off

Players who sign up to LIV Golf in 2027 will be barred from competing in DP World Tour events.

Some of the world’s top players – such as Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton – were given conditional releases by the European tour in previous seasons, allowing them to compete on both circuits.

But from next season, in order to be eligible for Europe’s Ryder Cup team, players must be members of the DP World Tour.

DP World Tour: Players need to ‘make a choice’

Speaking about the development, DP World Tour chief executive officer Guy Kinnings said players must now ‘make a choice’.

‘Players need to make a choice. We have rules and regulations which are there to protect our tour and which our members must all abide by,’ he told BBC Sport.

‘Players who are not willing to comply with our rules and regulations should not be seeking to join our tour.’

Kinnings declaration comes less than a week after it was revealed that Rahm will be quitting LIV Golf after refusing to accept new terms offered for its proposed relaunch. The Spaniard is reported to be owed up to £113million for the remainder of the contract he signed almost three years ago.

Rahm’s pending exit is the latest blow to LIV’s future following last month’s revelation that Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund is withdrawing support at the end of the season and is going through Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings in the United States.

The breakaway series has secured an initial funding commitment for a potential £227m investment from BC Partners Credit to help relaunch LIV 2.0 in 2027.

Deadlines for both tours fall next month and players will be asked to disclose which they intend to play on.

LIV players such as the outgoing Rahm, Hatton, Victor Perez and Tom McKibbin are currently eligible to play on the DP World Tour under one of its membership categories.

Next year’s Ryder Cup is taking place at Adare Manor, in the Republic of Ireland, with Europe looking to beat the USA for a third-straight tournament after impressive victories in 2023 and 2025.
