Scottie Scheffler wins the FedEx Cup after victory at The Players Championship

Scottie Scheffler has won his second FedEx Cup after claiming victory at The Players Championship on Sunday.

The American finished 16-under-par at TPC Sawgrass, finishing three shots better off than Norway’s Viktor Hovland.

The final round proved decisive as Scheffler shot a 66, while overnight leader Hovland struggled with a 72 as he faded especially on the back nine.

The phrase ‘to the victor go the spoils’ applied here to Scheffler who collected £7.4million ($10m) in prize money for winning the PGA Tour’s season-ending tournament in Atlanta.

It moves Scheffler to the top of the PGA Tour’s career money list on £96.3m ($130.4m), surpassing the legendary Tiger Woods who is on £89.28m ($120.9m) and had led the standings for the past 25 years.

The victory also means Scheffler (2024 and 2026) joins Woods (2007 and 2009) and Rory McIlroy (2016, 2019 and 2022) as the only players to have won the event on multiple occasions.

‘To come from behind and be able to win tournament is a really cool feeling,’ Scheffler said.

‘There were a lot of talented guys in front of me on the leaderboard. I was fortunate to get off to a good start and put myself in the mix. It’s a gift to be out here on tour. Each and every day I’m going to try to give it my best.’

American debutant Ryan Gerard, who started one behind Hovland, ended the day in the same position and third overall on 12-under par.

Meanwhile, Masters champion McIlroy was among a cluster of players who finished tied-fourth on 11-under par. The others were Min-Woo Lee, Russell Henley, Chris Gotterup, Alex Fitzpatrick, Jacob Bridgeman and Ludvig Aberg.
