Rory McIlroy WINS The Masters for a second-straight year at Augusta National

Rory McIlroy is The Masters champion for a second-straight year after holding his nerve to prevail on a topsy-turvy Sunday at Augusta.

After a sublime two rounds at the iconic golf course, McIlroy found his six-shot lead evaporate on Saturday to sit joint-top of the leaderboard with Cameron Young going into Sunday’s final round.

Having finally completed the grand slam with victory here last year, McIlroy didn’t crack under the pressure as he dropped down the leaderboard at different stages of the final day due to the form of Young and Justin Rose.

While his two main challengers wilted at times, the 36-year-old’s play improved as his round wore on to shoot a one-under-par round of 71.

He ended up finishing on 12-under-par across the four days, one stroke better than world No 1 Scottie Scheffler who shot up the leaderboard with a final-day round of 68 for an overall score of 11-under.

It was a four-way tie for third with Young, Rose – who lost last year in a play-off to McIlroy, Russell Henley and Tyrrell Hatton all finish 10-under for the tournament.

Now a six-time major winner, McIlroy becomes just the fourth player to successfully defend The Masters after Jack Nicklaus (1965-66), Nick Faldo (1989-90) and Tiger Woods (2001-02).
