John Rahm’s relationship with LIV Golf has concluded with him giving up a reported £75million to leave the tour.
As revealed last week, the Spaniard announced his intentions to leave LIV Golf due to the ‘unacceptable’ terms for its relaunch.
Last month, the rebel tour begun proceedings to file for bankruptcy protection with at least £33m owed to players.
A Chapter 11 petition, which is intended to ‘preserve the company’s business as a going concern’, was filed in the United States after Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund withdrew support at the end of the season having spent £3.7billion in four years.
While the likes of Sergio Garcia were successful in petitioning the court to lift the automatic stay on their contracts, effectively freeing them up to pursue other opportunities next year, Rahm was not afforded the same escape.
However, on Wednesday an agreement was filed for Rahm’s exit and is scheduled for a judge’s approval on November 5.
The agreement says Rahm owes no further service or performance obligations under any contract, is not bound by league regulations or team rules and policies and may join or contract with any tour, league, or sponsor without notice to or consent from LIV. The Spaniard also was granted his name, image and likeness rights under the agreement.
Rahm is scheduled to play his first event following his LIV departure between November 5-8 at the Abu Dhabi Championship in the United Arab Emirates – which in the DP World Tour.
This latest development follows Monday’s news that players who sign up to LIV Golf in 2027 will be barred from competing in DP World Tour events.
Some of the world’s top players – such as Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton – were given conditional releases by the European tour in previous seasons, allowing them to compete on both circuits.
But from next season, in order to be eligible for Europe’s Ryder Cup team, players must be members of the DP World Tour.
Next year’s Ryder Cup is taking place at Adare Manor, in the Republic of Ireland, with Europe looking to beat the USA for a third-straight tournament after impressive victories in 2023 and 2025.
