The January transfer window hasn’t opened yet, but Liverpool have already strengthened ahead of it by securing the services of the in-demand Cody Gakpo.

The Reds announced the arrival of the 23-year-old from PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday, with the forward officially joining on January 1 in a £44million transfer.

The Netherlands international has signed a five-and-a-half year contract at the club and will wear the No 18 shirt.

Cody Gakpo: Joining Liverpool is a good place to ‘develop’

‘I’m looking forward to start training and start playing for this amazing club,’ he said.

‘I think this is a great club for me to come in and try to show what I can [do] and try to help the team to achieve more beautiful moments that they already did in the past years.

‘I think for me personally it’s also good to develop here and there’s a lot of great players here [who] I can learn a lot of things from.’

Liverpool’s acquisition for Gakpo is seen as a coup considering they beat bitter rivals Manchester United to his signature.

He has been in fine form this season, scoring nine goals and providing 12 assists in 14 league games for PSV.

At the World Cup, he scored three goals for the Dutch as they reached the World Cup quarter-finals – losing to eventual winners Argentina.
