Under-fire Michael Carrick will remain in the dugout for Manchester United’s Premier League trip to Chelsea on Saturday afternoon.

It is understood the 45-year-old will be given a chance to overturn the Red Devils’ fortunes after an abysmal start to the season. After Chelsea, United host Roma in the Champions League (November 3) before welcoming Aston Villa in the top flight five days later before the November international break begins.

Carrick, who has seen the likes of Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann linked with replacing him, oversaw first-team training on Tuesday morning as he bids to end their eight-game winless run in all competitions.

Michael Carrick’s time looked finished after Bournemouth beating

The former United midfielder’s time as head coach looked set to conclude after his side were comprehensively beaten 3-0 by Bournemouth at home on Sunday in the Premier League.

That defeat was set against a backdrop of a toxic atmosphere within Old Trafford and a cacophony of boos.

Despite the vitriol, United fans sang Carrick’s name defiantly as they took their anger at Ineos and the players.

United have begun the season with just two wins to show from their first 12 matches so far. Those victories came against Premier League new boys Ipswich Town and Champions League debutants Sabah – who were only founded nine years ago.

Carrick was initially appointed as head coach at the club in January following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim. He signed a contract until the end of the season but after turning their fortunes around, he penned a two-year contract this summer.

However, this season has proved to be a nightmare with the likes of Lisandro Martinez and captain Bruno Fernandes going public with their discontent too.

Carrick’s record at United since he joined so far reads 14 wins – 12 of which came last season, prior to being made permanent head coach – six draws and seven defeats.
