Julian Nagelsmann has resigned as Germany head coach following their dismal World Cup exit at the last-32 stage.

The four-time winners were shocked by Paraguay, losing 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra-time.

After that match, the under-fire 38-year-old insisted he would stay on the role but has since had a change of heart.

‘I’ve done a lot of thinking in the days since our elimination and have consulted with trusted individuals both personally and within the federation,’ he said in a statement.

‘The decision was anything but easy for me. My top priority has always been the team’s success. After such a bitter disappointment, they deserve the chance for a fresh start.’

Jurgen Klopp is in the running to succeed Naglesmann, having been out of management since leaving Liverpool at the end of the 2023-24 season.

In a statement, the DFB (German FA) said it ‘will now seek talks with Jurgen Klopp’, adding: ‘He has already signalled his general willingness to take on the position.’
