Eddie Howe QUITS as Newcastle head coach

Eddie Howe has quit as Newcastle head coach after nearly five years at the helm.

The sudden news comes the morning after Newcastle’s heavy pre-season 4-1 defeat at Bristol City.

His exit comes follows a disappointing season where the Magpies finished 12th in the Premier League.

Despite that, Howe departs as their most successful boss in more than half a century, guiding them to the first piece of silverware in 70 years when they won the 2024-25 Carabao Cup. He also qualified for the Champions League twice during his tenure and helped them avoid relegation when he first joined in November 2021.

Howe’s coaches Jason Tindall, Graeme Jones, Stephen Purches and Simon Weatherstone will also leave St James’ Park, as well as head of performance Dan Hodges.

‘After a period of personal reflection, I have decided that now is the right time for me to step away from my role,’ said Howe.

‘After nearly five years of giving my life, heart and soul into the club with unrelenting energy, I feel that it is in the best interests of both myself and the club to step away, recharge and take a break.

‘Although it’s been incredibly difficult to make this decision, I know in my heart that it’s the right one.

‘It has been the privilege of my lifetime to have been the manager of Newcastle United.

‘There have been so many incredible moments in our time here. From fighting relegation in our first season to the numerous unforgettable nights at St James’ Park in the Champions League soon after. The progression was fast.

‘Everyone came together, united and what a force we became. These are all memories that I will cherish for the rest of my life.’

What’s next for Newcastle?

Matthias Jaissle is set to replace Howe at St. James’ Park. The 38-year-old has enjoyed success at RB Salzburg and at current side Al-Ahli.
