The Premier League has announced it’s festive fixtures, with seven matches set to take place on Boxing Day.
The change is a huge contrast to last season, when there was only one fixture that day – which saw Manchester United beat Newcastle United 1-0.
With Boxing Day falling on a Saturday this year, there will be four different type of kick-off times. There will be four matches played at 3pm GMT with the other three played at 12.30pm, 5.30pm and 8pm.
The other three games that matchweek will be played on Sunday, December 27. There will the be a further three round of games across the Christmas and New Year period up to Thursday, January 7.
There will be a round of evening midweek fixtures played between December 29-30, while on New Year’s Day the sole clash will be Leeds United vs Everton (8pm).
The remainder of that round will be held over the weekend of January 2-3, with the fourth round of games spread across the evenings of January 5-7.
The Premier League’s move to release the fixtures early comes after consultation with both broadcast partners and the Football Supporters’ Association and representatives from club Fan Advisory Boards. Doing it like this allows fans time to plan travel and accommodation routes over the festive period.
Furthermore, teams will have at least a 60-hour break between fixtures. This is in keeping with commitments made to clubs to address the congested festive schedule – in the context of an expanding European and international fixture calendar.
While these fixtures are out, broadcast selections for match rounds in November are due to be announced by the week commencing September 21 and match rounds in December will be announced by the week commencing October 19.
