Ben White earns England call-up for the first time since 2022 World Cup – as Harvey Barnes is also selected amid injury withdrawals

Ben White has been called up to the England squad for the first time since he left their 2022 World Cup camp.

White has not been on international duty since November 2022 when it was announced that he left Gareth Southgate’s setup during the group stages in Qatar.

The Arsenal defender cited personal reasons for his decision and then made himself unavailable for the rest of Southgate’s reign, which ended after the Three Lions’ Euro 2024 final defeat by Spain.

However, with Thomas Tuchel now in charge – the 28-year-old has made himself available and has been called-up following an injury to Jarrell Quansah in the original 35-man party for this month’s friendlies.

White’s inclusion asks questions of where Trent Alexander-Arnold sits in Tuchel’s pecking order – with the Real Madrid right back once again omitted last week, despite being a regular starter for the Spanish giants.

White has made only seven Premier League appearances for leaders Arsenal this season.

However, he has played in eight of their 10 Champions League games in their run to the quarter-finals and started Sunday’s 2-0 Carabao Cup final defeat by Manchester City.

Harvey Barnes has also been called up as a replacement for the injured Eberechi Eze, turning down Scotland’s advances,

The Newcastle winger has been called up by England once before, in October 2020, when he won his only cap in a friendly against Wales.
