Three things we learned from Premier League MW2: From Bournemouth’s star who continues to shine and the Newcastle player back in form

The second weekend of the Premier League season has once again provided plenty of talking points. 

From Alex Scott continuing to develop into an increasingly important player for Bournemouth, to Yoane Wissa showing his versatility for Newcastle and Bruno Fernandes reminding everyone of his world-class quality, here are three things that stood out from the weekend.

1. Alex Scott is becoming increasingly important for Bournemouth 

Bournemouth’s 1-1 draw with Everton may have ended in frustration after a late equaliser, but there were plenty of positives for Marco Rose’s side. 

One of them was Scott. 

The midfielder opened the scoring with a composed finish and once again demonstrated the technical quality that has made him such an exciting prospect since arriving at Bournemouth. 

Scott is beginning to look increasingly comfortable in the Premier League. His ability to receive the ball under pressure, progress possession and contribute in the final third makes him an important part of Bournemouth’s midfield. 

There is also plenty of evidence that Scott is developing at international level too. 

He was part of the England Under-21 side that won the European Under-21 Championship, adding international silverware to his growing list of achievements. 

That experience could prove valuable as he looks to take another step forward at club level. 

What makes Scott particularly interesting is his versatility. He can operate deeper in midfield but also has the ability to move forward and arrive in dangerous areas. 

For Bournemouth, that flexibility is hugely valuable. 

The next challenge for Scott is consistency. If he can continue producing performances like this, there is every reason to believe this could be the season where he establishes himself as one of Bournemouth’s key players.

2. Yoane Wissa is back 

Wissa’s start to life at Newcastle is beginning to look very different from his difficult first season. 

The Congolese forward returned from the World Cup with confidence and form, having impressed for DR Congo during the tournament. 

Now that form is beginning to translate into the Premier League. 

Wissa has already demonstrated that he can operate in multiple positions within Newcastle’s attack. 

Against Liverpool, he was used as a No 10, allowing him to drop into deeper areas, link play and influence the game between the lines. 

Against Tottenham, however, he was deployed as the No 9 in a difficult away fixture. He responded in the best possible way, by scoring in Newcastle’s 2-0 victory. That versatility could become one of Newcastle’s biggest attacking weapons this season. 

Wissa isn’t simply a striker who stays on the shoulder of the last defender. He can drop deep, combine with team-mates, make runs in behind and still arrive in the box to finish chances. 

For manager Matthias Jaissle, having a forward capable of performing both roles gives Newcastle considerably more tactical flexibility. 

After scoring at Spurs, the message is becoming increasingly clear: Wissa is back.

3. Bruno Fernandes continues to prove his world-class quality 

Manchester United’s 5-2 victory over Ipswich Town provided plenty of reasons for optimism, but once again, Bruno Fernandes was at the centre of everything. 

The Portuguese midfielder produced a stunning individual performance, scoring a hat-trick and providing an assist. 

The numbers alone tell you how influential he was. 

But this wasn’t simply a one-off performance from Fernandes.

Since arriving at Manchester United, he has consistently been the player his team turns to when they need creativity, goals or inspiration. 

Regardless of the managers, team-mates or systems around him, Fernandes has repeatedly taken responsibility. 

His willingness to demand the ball, attempt the difficult pass and create something from nothing has become a defining feature of his Manchester United career. 

His influence was particularly evident against Ipswich, with Kobbie Mainoo and Marcus Rashford also returning to the starting XI. 

Yet Fernandes remained the focal point. 

A hat-trick and an assist is an extraordinary return, but perhaps the most impressive thing about Fernandes is how consistently he produces. 

Manchester United have experienced plenty of uncertainty in recent years. One constant, however, has been Fernandes. 

That consistency is what makes the debate around his status at the club so interesting. There are very few players who have carried the creative responsibility of a Manchester United side for such a sustained period. 

Fernandes has done exactly that. 

And performances like this are another reminder that Manchester United have had a genuinely world-class player in their midfield for years..

The early-season picture 

Two weeks into the new Premier League campaign, there are already plenty of narratives beginning to take shape. 

Scott is showing signs of becoming a key figure for Bournemouth, Wissa is demonstrating that his versatility could be crucial for Newcastle, while Fernandes continues to remind everyone of his importance to Manchester United. 

And with the season still in its infancy, there will undoubtedly be plenty more lessons to come.
