Manchester City sign Enzo Fernandez for a joint-British record £125MILLION transfer from Chelsea

Manchester City have signed Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea in a joint-British record £125million transfer on deadline day.

The stunning fee matches the sum Liverpool paid for Alexander Isak from Newcastle last summer.

Fernandez has signed a five-year contract at the Etihad Stadium until June 2031.

The move also sees him reunited with former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca who left the Blues on New Year’s Day and was appointed City head coach in June following Pep Guardiola’s departure.

On joining Manchester City, Fernandez told the club’s official website: ‘Manchester City are the most successful club in England in recent times.

‘Every player wants to be part of a club like this because everyone knows how well-run City are.

‘I could not be happier to be here, and I am ready for the challenge of helping City continue winning trophies. This is a club built for success.

‘If you look across the squad, City have quality in every area. I want to learn from my new teammates and become a better player.

‘I pride myself on continually improving my game. Anyone who’s worked with me will know how hard I train every single day and how much I put into matches. I give absolutely everything and I can promise Manchester City that will continue now I’m here.

‘I want to thank Hugo [Viana], Enzo [Maresca], Khaldoon [Al Mubarak] and everyone at City who has made this deal possible. I want to take the faith shown in me and repay it as soon as possible.’

Manchester City splash the cash once again this summer

He is the third midfielder City have splashed a large sum of money on this summer following Elliot Anderson’s £116m arrival and Ayyoub Bouaddi who joined for £86m.

Midfield has been a key area of redevelopment for City with lynchpin Rodri having left for Barcelona in a £65m transfer last month.

Overall the Fernandez deal takes City’s spending to a Premier League record £458m for a single transfer window, surpassing Liverpool’s £415m from last summer.

However, City have also achieved around £300m from player sales this summer.
