West Ham United have sacked head coach Nuno Espirito Santo with former club captain Scott Parker in line to succeed him.

Nuno, who was originally appointed last September, has been given his marching orders with the Hammers sitting eighth in the Championship – six points adrift of table-toppers Middlesbrough after 13 games.

The 52-year-old’s final game in charge was Saturday’s 3-1 home defeat by West Bromwich Albion, which followed a 3-2 home loss against Southampton the weekend before.

Mark Noble, Steve Potts and Gerard Prenderville will take temporary charge of the side for their trip to Cardiff City on Wednesday night in the Championship.

West Ham United statement on Nuno Espirito Santo’s sacking

In a statement on Tuesday morning, the London Stadium outfit announced: ‘West Ham United can confirm that men’s first-team Head Coach Nuno Espírito Santo has left his position with immediate effect.

‘Following a thorough review of the start to the EFL Championship season, the Board of Directors believe that a change is necessary at this time in order to ensure that the Club’s objectives and expectations remain on track.

‘Assistant Head Coach Rui Pedro Silva and Goalkeeper Coach Rui Barbosa have also departed.

‘West Ham United would like to thank Nuno, Rui and Rui for their hard work and commitment during their time at the Club, and wish them all the very best for the future.

‘The process of recruiting a new Head Coach is already underway.

‘Mark Noble, Steve Potts and Gerard Prenderville will take temporary charge of squad preparations ahead of tomorrow evening’s EFL Championship fixture at Cardiff City, and the Club will make no further comment until the appointment of the new Head Coach is confirmed.’

Scott Parker’s managerial credentials

West Ham are now looking for their fourth manager since David Moyes left in May 2024 following Julen Lopetegui, Graham Potter and now Nuno’s short reigns.

If Parker does join the club, he comes with the expectation of restoring their top-flight status following their Premier League relegation on the final day of last season.

He does have the nous for getting teams promoted from the Championship having done it previously with Fulham, Bournemouth and Burnley – managing the trio in the top flight too. His most recent experience in the Premier League came at Burnley where he left in April, just days after their relegation back to the Championship.

As a player, the now 46-year-old made 129 appearances in a four-year stint with the Hammers – winning the club’s player of the year award three times. He was also named Football Writers’ Association player of the year in 2011 during his time in east London.
