Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua’s long-awaited heavyweight showdown has taken a step closer to being a late one for those in the UK.

The British rivals announced last month that they will go toe-to-toe in the ring on December 11 at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff.

The bout will be broadcast globally on Netflix and as a result, it’s been documented that the ringwalk timings will suit the North American audience more with it due to take place between 1am-2am GMT, which would be 8pm-9pm EST.

And those plans are in motion after an application to Cardiff Council revealed the ringwalk is planned to start at around 1am GMT after a short live music performance, with the stadium remaining open until 3.30am.

An application to vary a premises licence must be advertised, including by displaying a notice at or on the premises, for 28 consecutive days.

Members of the public and other authorities may make an objection to the application or comment in support of it until November 3, external.

If no relevant representations are received, the council must grant the application.

However, if objections are made then a council hearing will be held to consider them.

Following the announcement of the fight last month, Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn confirmed that scenario for the Friday night into Saturday morning showdown.

‘It’s my understanding it will be around 1-1.30am [for the main event] but, again, if it creeps to 2am, I don’t know,’ Hearn told his Matchroom Boxing YouTube channel.

‘It’s quite unique because on a Saturday, boxing would start around 4-5pm. You’re really looking at boxing probably starting around 8pm or 9pm.’

This won’t be the first time that the Principality Stadium has held late-night boxing before, with home favourite Joe Calzaghe’s sublime win over Mikkel Kessler in November 2007 which began at 1am GMT.
