Arsenal laid down a marker ahead of the Premier League season beginning after a dominant Community Shield win over Manchester City.

In a battle between last season’s Premier League champions versus the FA Cup holders, it was the former who shone at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff.

Arsenal took the lead after just 23 seconds when Riccardo Calafiori was put through on goal by Myles Lewis-Skelly.

Mikel Arteta’s side doubled their lead on 28 minutes when Kai Havertz’s downward header found the back of the net. The Germany international’s goal came courtesy of summer signing Christos Tzolis after he had nodded Martin Odegaard’s cross back across goal.

And soon after half-time it was the impressive Tzolis on his competitive debut who turned provider once more as he found Odegaard – who dummied Gianluigi Donnarumma – to score.

In what was City’s first competitive game since Pep Guardiola left, new boss Enzo Maresca will have plenty of food for thought.

For Arsenal, their 18th Community Shield title sets them in good stead ahead of the Premier League curtain-raiser at home to new boys Coventry City on Friday night (8pm).
